The E-portfolio and Blogging

Weebly allows you to create web pages, it also allows multiple blogs to be created under one site. The E-portfolio can be set up however you want, with multiple pages, a blog per subject, or one main blog. At first it is tempting to set up lots of different blogs to cover each subject. It is recommended that this is not done and the E-portfolio is run through one main blog. This allows a more cohesive approach to the students E-portfolio and allows for easier interaction by the e-portfolios audience. The power of a blog is that you are able to search it and organise the collection of learning artifacts around any category that you want. This does make the categories chosen very important and this is discussed below. Using a blog also allows the E-portfolio to be part process and part product.

CategoriesThe blog categories are an important part of the blog. Through the categories you can search a blog and show work under a theme, subject area, unit of inquiry, learner profile and so on. It is important to have some form of structure to the categories that you would like the students to use. This will be especially useful towards the end of the year when the students showcase their learning through the e-portfolio. For instance, if a student wants to show that they have been a risk-taker, all they need to do is click on the category called risk-taker and this will show all articles which they tagged risk-taker with the latest at the top. Categories works in a very similar way to tagging.

Considerations:

  • What are the areas that the portfolio should be showcasing across the curriculum / year group?
  • What specific categories should be included for your grade or subject?
  • There should be some consistency across all the teachers who interact with that student.
  • Do any specific categories need to be developed for the portfolio? See this video for ideas.
