What a week!

Whew, what a busy but wonderful week we have all had. Andy and Mei welcomed Vincent to the world, we prepared for the Exhibition, we presented the Exhibition and then we packed it all away. It has been a hugely successful week of students sharing their learning with the whole school community. Well done Grade 5's - you should be very proud of yourselves. We had visitors online from a range of different schools, online visitors from Japan and India, K3 students through to Grade 11 students, prospective parents, teachers and of course Grade 5 parents. Thankyou so much for all of the support you have offered over the last 8 weeks and for coming to see all of the hard work that has been done. We will be reflecting on the Exhibition next week and moving onto our new Space Unit. You can check out reflections and peer comments here:  http://hkaexhibition2011.weebly.com/

Next week we are joining the Grade Four classes in a Hunger Banquet.  On Wednesday, May 18, students will participate in the Oxfam Hunger Banquet that demonstrates inequalities in distribution of resources. Students are asked to please bring a $40 donation for Oxfam before Wednesday.

Please make sure you read all of the required reading for Puberty Blues on Monday. Also please return MS Language Choice forms on Monday as well.

Have a restful weekend! Next week will be a more regular week with more frequent blog updates.

Kind regards,

The Final Push

Today we had a big final push to be ready for the Exhibition. Well done to everyone who worked hard to get their presentations ready. Our virtual invites have gone out and the new Exhibition website is avaiable here.

  • Dear Parents and Mentors,
  • The Exhibition is fast approaching. This week students are busy taking action or finalising their action. On Thursday we will begin focusing our attention on creating the displays for the following weeks presentations and some students will still be working on their action during this time too! Our homework for the next two weeks is focused on the Exhibition along with lots of class time.
  • Next Wednesday we will be setting up the MPR and preparing for our first visitors on Thursday. The Exhibition will be open Thursday and Friday with our 'official' launch taking place on Thursday evening.

It has been a couple of days since my last post and the Exhibition has moved into top gear. The students are now using their math time to look at feedback from their questionnaires such at these from the Ocean group. We have had many discussions about action and even been presented models of water bottles, t-shirts and other action items by the different groups. One group is organising a beach clean up at Shek-O this Sunday at 3:00. Come along and support them if you have time.

Today we had a group at Ocean Park finding our about recycling there and another group is going to the zoological gardens tomorrow to find out about how they can encourage birds to live around our school environment. Many thanks to the parents who are supporting the students with the ideas and endeavors, we couldn't do it without your guidance and support!
The Exhibition stepped up a few gears today as we asked the students to commit to their action. We had a discussion with all of the groups and are happy with the way they are progressing towards some meaningful action. We should now see some of that beginning to happen and there may have some strange requests at home as students ask with help to take action. If this happens we need to record the action and take lots of photos so we can see how it progresses.
Here is a little treat from earlier in the week. The students were practicing a piece they may be sharing at the Art showcase later in the year.
Pyjama Day in 5AB
Poem in your pocket is tomorrow!

Also due tomorrow is a blog post about why you chose your Exhibition problem. What does it mean to you, your family, the world? Give your reasoning. We have also had some great Exhibition logos, keep them coming!

Conjunctions sheet is due tomorrow from last week.

Exhibition 23rd March - Mission Statements
Today we gave out the Exhibition booklet. Remember it is your responsibility to bring your booklet to each of the Exhibition meetings. You will also need to have your parents sign the booklet after they have looked at it. You should read the two pages at the front and the rubrics at the back.

Exhibition Logos
You can see our presentation from today here. This shows you some examples of the logos that we talked about. The t-shirt logo competition is due this Friday and should also be working on a group logo, although this is due when your group decide.

Today we took our second step along the Exhibition path. We discussed Central Ideas and how to create one from our transdisciplinary theme. You can see todays presentation and notes on our wiki below.

Our class hamster went on its first home visit and spent some time with Tanvi over the weekend. She realized that the hamster wanted a dark corner and gave her a tube which she has become comfortable in. You can see her daily here. Tomorrow is the deadline for hand drawn hamster pictures to choose our hamsterTV design from!
