Dear Parents,

Today will you will have received the first semester report card from your child. This is also the time that portfolios are sent home. This is slightly different in grade 5 as our portfolios are electronic and you have had access to them all year. Please take some time to visit them and ask your son or daughter about the many things that they have put onto their site.

Later on in the year the students will take you on a tour of their portfolio. One easy way to look through it is to use the categories on the right hand side of the blog. This is where the students have tagged everything in their portfolio. You will be able to see examples of work that they have chosen to show the Learner profile and also the three units we have done throughout the year. Please take a moment to fill in our portfolio reflection form here.

Many thanks to those of you who helped with the costumes for the Lunar New Year fashion show. Without your hard work we would not have been able to create the costumes that we have and I look forward to showing them off at the Lunar New Year festival on the 9th of February.

We also wished Jen our Learner Support Assistant a fond farewell as today was her last day. Thankfully we will still see her later on in the year when she comes in to help.

Have a good Chinese New Year break and I look forward to seeing you all after the holiday.

Warm regards,

Miss Jenn's leaving party
Today we celebrated the start of Chinese New Year by helping our buddies with a craft activity. They could make a door hanger, a Chinese fan or a dragon. It was a great way to celebrate the start of CNY.

Casual Dress Day.
Tomorrow is casual dress day. We are asking that students come in dressed in the Chinese New Year colours of red and gold, or something linked to Chinese New Year. We do have P.E. so it should be something that can be worn there as well. We will have a Lunar New Year performance on the 9th of Februray to really show off our best CNY clothes.
Grade 5 is organising this years lion dance. Stay tuned for a great performance at the Lunar New Year festival.
5AB found out today that they are in the Dragons team for our sports day on Friday the 11th of February and our team colour is blue. It is time to look through the wardrobe and find things that we can wear on the day. There are spirit points for the most colourful team. Go the blue Dragons!
Yesterday grade 5 travelled to the Hong Kong Science Museum to see a special Leonardo da Vinci exhibition. Our current unit is Where We Are In Place and Time and we have been researching inventions that are important to us today. Leonardo da Vinci was an incredible inventor and it was great to see many of of his inventions close up and realise how many amazing ideas he had. Students will be finding out more and testing their knowledge at Brainpop.

Posting A Parcel

Around December and Chinese New Year people post a lot of parcels containing gifts. Can you work out the cost of these parcels?
After many class meetings, sharing of ideas and two great presentations, the decision was made to have a hamster as our class pet. Well done to the hamster group who showed their great research on the presentation which is embedded below and on their wiki. This was all student led action and they should be complemented on their commitment and quality of inquiry.

The next stage is to take the idea and make it reality. We discussed all of the things that need to be done and came up with a list that is embedded below. We will use this list to organise us and make sure we all know what our responsibilities are.

The students have been thinking careful about the money and the questions that we asked. One idea is to have a sale and raise money from that for the class pet. Stay tuned for more details.
Measuring Madness
We have spent a lot of time this week getting hands on with different measurement units. From filling containers to understand milliliters and liters, measuring objects in the classroom in centimeters and working out the times that the rickshaw bus takes to get around Hong Kong. Enjoy a photographic snapshot of the activities below.

Problem Solving
Three dozen plastic balls are in a bag. If 12 are red and 12 are blue, how many of them are plastic?

Rocket Writing

Students will be posting a copy of some rocket writing that they have just completed in the next couple of days. The writing was written after a lesson with Ms. Virginia using a picture as a story prompt.

There has also been lots of activity on the blogs. Information reports are now uploaded along with rubrics and pictures of their timelines. Visit one of the blogs and see the great work. Please take a moment to leave a comment following our commenting guidelines. If you do not know the password to our student blogs contact me through the contact tab above.

Kaiya's Timeline
Once again our great parent helpers came to help us create our costumes for the Lunar New Year fashion show. The classroom and art room were a hive of activity as the sewing machines buzzed into life and the final cutting out of the costumes was done.

We now have an extra session on Thursday from 11:00 - 12:00 to sew the costumes. Come along if you want to help and can run a sewing machine!

Math problem
The average American teenager sends ________ text messages a month.

Well done everyone for a great start on your stories, remember this is one of your main homework assignments this week.

We moved another step closer to our fashion show today, cutting out the material and even beginning to stitch them together. Next week we be taking the next step and sewing. Thanks to all the parents who came to help.
