Respect, buddies and beliefs 11/18/2009

Respect
Today we discussed the notion of respect and what it means within different settings. Take some time tonight to discuss respect with your parents.

Buddy Blog
Tonight write about your buddy times. How do you feel they are going? What ideas do you have for buddy time? What is a positive comment about your buddy? What may you need to work on with your buddy? Do you remember having a buddy when you were young? You could write about any connections you may have. Remember to finish your storybird book, you will be sharing these with your buddies on Friday! Visit www.storybird.com. Your log in is your name with hkab on the ned. The password is the same as always.

Bag of Beliefs / Values blog
Your homework tomorrow is to write a blog post about the bag of beliefs that you presented. You should discuss what you presented and what they mean to you. You can also write about what other students presented. What were the similarities and differences that you observed? Any interesting things that you found out? You could write this today and have no UOI homework tomorrow.

AIR
We had a great time today seeing all the artistic endeavors of HKA students. From plays to songs to books and wall hangings we explored the different interpretations of the myths. Well done to all of the HKA staff who organised the week and our visiting artists. A slideshow will be available very soon.

Blogs
The main homework this week is to continue working on the blogs. Each student must comment on one other blog each night! Well done to Scott for committing to his blog and writing regular posts. Some students are also adding some extra creative pages, well done. Just remember that any video added must be approved by myself and your parents, and you must include a reason why it is there. This reason must be thoughtful. Comments such as 'it's cool' or 'I like it' will not do.

Voicethread
This week you will be teaching our buddies how to make a voicethread. Make sure you know how to. Practice some of the skills that you have learnt. You can make a voicethread about something at home or something you have done recently.

Make a Movie 10/14/2009

Here is a great movie website that you could use to experiment with. You could create a short film to advertise your blog, advertise your community or even tell a story. Have a go making a short film and host it onto your blog.

When you have finished making the film make sure you keep the details. Then we can put it into your blog if you don't know how.

Student blogs - now active! 10/13/2009
3 Comments

The student websites and blogs are now active. They are located under home on the class website. Student websites are all named in a similar way e.g. astrid's website is http://astridhkab.weebly.com

Each website is the students name with hkab added onto it followed by weekly.com

Students should access them through http://students.weebly.com/

All websites are protected by our class password. Each website has the same password to access it and students have chosen their own private password to be able to make changes. Please keep the class password safe and don't share it with anyone outside of the HKA community or your family.

Students will be focusing on the blogs to begin with, but will be developing their own website and can add pages and try out new ideas. Some students are even embedding the class newsletter into their website.

It is possible to keep track of changes to a blog by rss feeds. As a parent this will help you to keep an eye on what is happening on your child's blog without needing to visit the website. This is also how I am keeping track of them.

I have posted the blog / website guidelines that grade 5 developed below. Please take a moment to read them.

Grade 5 Blog: Guidelines

Tell the truth.
No personal information.
Be careful what you write.
Do not post things you will regret.
Be respectful to other people and to their opinions.

Grade 5 Blog: Things To Think About

Have I made good choices?
Did I think about this before I posted it?
Could I hurt someone with this post?
Is what Iíve posted copyrighted material?
Have I included textual references that support my opinion in my post?
Have I checked my post for correct spelling, grammar and punctuation?

Blog Guidelines 10/09/2009

This morning the Grade 5 students worked on their blog guidelines. We looked at many different examples, of guidelines, rules, acceptable use policies and successful blogging strategies. The students shared ideas collaboratively and came up with group lists. These were then used to select the guidelines that you see below. Please take a moment to read these, both parents and students as these will need to be agreed upon before we start our blogging.

Student Blogs and Websites 10/05/2009

Spellings
This week there will be no spelling tests due to the ISA tests. Spellings will start again next week.

ISA testing
Today we had the first of two days given to ISA tests. The students completed two Maths tests and a writing assignment. More details about these tests is available in the latest admin newsletter here.

Blogs and Student Websites
As part of creating an interactive digital environment for the Grade 5 students, we want to setup up student blogs and websites online. These would be protected by a password and only accessible to members of the Hong Kong Academy community. This will enable us to enrich the students learning experiences and teach responsible use of the internet in line with our Acceptable Use Policy.

The websites and blog will be monitored by the Grade 5 teachers on a regular basis and be fully open for parents to interact with.

In line with the guidelines here at HKA, and the requirements of the websites we wish to use we need to have your consent.

Please take a moment to fill in the consent form here. Please fill in the form by Wednesday the 7th.

Blogs and websites can both enrich a students learning and be virtual hub for their learning. Blogs have been shown to help develop higher order thinking, good reflection practices and can engage and drive student learning beyond the boundaries of the classroom. I will be giving out more details on this soon.

Contact me if you have any questions.

DJ the Dog! 08/28/2009

We are now the proud parents of a classroom dog called DJ. After an intensive day of debating and voting, a consensus was finally reached and the dog became DJ.

Also well done to Omer for his classroom diary front cover design that was selected by the other students to grace the front cover of all the homework diaries. There were some creative and colourful designs which showed the effort the students had put into them.

Today I asked you to write as many different words as you could about the IB learner profile. I combined all of your words and created a word cloud. You can see the results below. Have a good weekend!
